Knowing how to fix a tubeless bike tire puncture can save a ride, a walk home and a lot of sealant sprayed over your frame. For a normal hole in the center tread, the safest roadside default is to plug the tire while it remains on the wheel. Removing it immediately usually creates a bigger, messier problem.
This guide assumes your tubeless tire is already fitted and seated. It covers trailside and roadside punctures: finding the hole, inserting a plug, adding sealant, using a boot, and deciding when to fit a tube or replace the tire. What to Carry for a Tubeless Puncture Repair
A realistic tubeless repair kit needs more than sealant and optimism. Carry:
- A tubeless plug kit with spare plugs
- A plug insertion tool
- Tire levers
- A compact hand pump or suitable inflator
- A small amount of compatible sealant
- A valve-core tool
- A tire boot
- A spare inner tube
- A rag or disposable gloves
For a normal tread puncture, a plug is the first choice. It seals the hole without removing the tire, keeps most of the sealant inside, and is usually faster than fitting a tube at the side of the road. A bacon-strip-style kit uses a sticky rubber strip pushed into the hole with a forked tool. A tool such as Dynaplug uses its own insertion system and plug design. The method differs, so follow the instructions supplied with your particular tool.
Do not rely on sealant alone. Sealant may close a small hole, but it cannot reliably deal with every larger puncture, and it is not an air source. Carrying only a CO2 cartridge is also a weak plan: once it is used, you may have no way to adjust pressure or inflate again after a second problem. A pump, plugs and a tube make a much more dependable kit.
Find the Puncture and Let the Sealant Work
Stop somewhere safe and keep the bike under control before inspecting the tire. Rotate the wheel slowly and look across the tread and sidewalls for glass, a thorn, a piece of wire or another sharp object. If you can hear air escaping, the leak may be obvious. Otherwise, look for sealant bubbling from the hole.
Keep the puncture near the bottom or lower side of the tire for a few moments. This gives the sealant a chance to collect around the opening. You can then rotate or gently shake the wheel to spread it around the inside of the tire. A very small hole may seal without a plug, especially if there is still enough sealant in the tire.
A fast leak usually needs intervention. If an object is stuck in the tire, leave it in place until the plug tool and plug are ready. The object may be slowing the leak. Pulling it out first can turn a manageable puncture into a small fountain.
Do not repeatedly ride on a flat tubeless tire while searching for the hole. You can damage the tire casing, unseat the bead or mark the rim. If the bike starts handling unpredictably, stop riding and inspect it rather than hoping the sealant will discover a second wind.
How to Plug a Tubeless Bike Tire Puncture
- Prepare the plug. Choose a plug suited to the size of the hole and load it into the insertion tool as directed. Keep the tool ready before removing the object from the tire.
- Remove the offending object. Pull out the thorn, glass or wire with your fingers or a multitool. Work quickly, but do not rush the insertion and stab yourself.
- Insert the plug. Push the tool firmly into the center of the tread puncture. Use controlled pressure and avoid enlarging a small hole unnecessarily. Most systems are designed to leave part of the plug outside the tire; do not push the entire plug inside unless the tool instructions specifically say to do so.
- Withdraw the tool. Pull it out according to the design of the plug kit. Leave the plug tails in place unless the manufacturer tells you to trim them. If trimming is required, leave enough material outside the tire for the plug to stay anchored.
- Assess larger holes carefully. Use a larger plug if your system supports one. A second plug may work for a larger tread hole, but repeated plugging is not a structural rebuild. If the casing is torn or the hole keeps opening, move to a boot and tube or end the ride.

- Inflate the tire. Use your pump or inflator to bring the tire back up to a sensible riding pressure.
Do not remove the tire just because the first repair looks untidy. Beginners often lose most of the sealant by dismantling a tire that could have been fixed in under a minute. Save tire removal for a failed plug, a cut casing, a damaged bead or a repair that clearly needs a tube.

Check the Seal and Restore Riding Pressure
Inflate the tire to a sensible pressure for your weight, tire width, rim and riding surface. The maximum number printed on the sidewall is not an instruction to use that pressure every time. Overinflating a damaged tire can make the repair less reliable and can make the bike harsh and skittish.
Rotate the wheel slowly and inspect both sides of the plug. Listen for escaping air and look for fresh bubbling or a spray of sealant. A plug can take a few seconds to seal as the rubber and sealant settle. You can briefly position the hole downward so sealant reaches it, but do not set off while it is visibly leaking.
Use a pump when possible because it gives you controlled pressure and remains useful later. CO2 is convenient for emergency inflation, but it is not a good substitute for a proper pump on a long ride. Replace it with normal air and check the tire again when you get home.
Before riding, check that the bead still sits evenly around the rim and that the valve is not the actual source of the leak. The repair is not finished when the tire holds air for five seconds. It is finished after the wheel survives inflation, rotation and a stationary leak check. Start with a cautious ride and pay attention to handling.

When a Plug Is Not Enough
A plug is intended for a puncture in the tread, not for every type of tire damage. If the hole is a long cut or the casing threads are visible, a plug may pull out as the tire flexes. A tire boot helps cover the damaged area and stops the tube from bulging through the cut, but this is a temporary get-home repair.
Fit a spare inner tube when the tire will not hold pressure, the sealant is exhausted, the bead has unseated, or the puncture is too large for a dependable plug. Remove enough loose sealant to work cleanly, check the inside of the tire for glass or thorns, and protect any sharp or torn area with a boot before fitting the tube. A folded section of suitable material may serve as an emergency boot, but a purpose-made boot is more reliable.
A sidewall cut, damaged bead, split casing or repeated plug failure is a replacement problem. Do not keep adding plugs because the tire holds air for a moment. Sidewall damage is where optimism becomes an expensive walk home.
After reaching safety, inspect the tire and rim properly. Replace the tire if its casing or bead is compromised. If you are unsure whether the damage is safe, treat that uncertainty as a reason not to continue riding at speed.

- Using a plug that is too small, or pushing the entire plug inside the tire.
- Trying to repair a sidewall cut with a standard tread plug.
- Removing the tire unnecessarily and spilling most of the sealant roadside.
- Inflating far beyond a sensible pressure to force a weak repair to hold.
- Carrying no pump, spare tube or tire boot because the tire sealed successfully at home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you plug a tubeless tire without adding sealant?
Sometimes. If enough sealant remains inside and the plug seals the hole, you may not need to add more immediately. If the tire has lost a lot of sealant, topping it up improves the chance of a lasting repair.
Can a tubeless plug be a permanent repair?
A well-seated tread plug may last a long time, but inspect it regularly. Sidewall cuts, casing damage and repeated plug failures usually call for a tire replacement rather than another plug.
